Fiverr vs. We Work Remotely – Freelance Platform Comparison for Buyers and Sellers
Have you ever thought about becoming a freelancer? There’s never been a better time to try. With flexible hours, the ability to work from the comfort of your home, and the range of companies you can work for, freelance work is becoming more and more popular.
Today, we will be comparing two freelance platforms, Fiverr and We Work Remotely.
For many employers, hiring freelancers can be more cost effective than hiring in-house staff as well.
Back in the day, it could be difficult to connect freelancers to those looking to purchase services without a pre-established connection. But now, there are many different platforms to help make this transaction easier.
Fiverr
What is Fiverr?
Fiverr is an online marketplace that connects freelancers to people looking to purchase these services. It is by far the most popular freelance marketplace, and since its founding in 2010 has become a global empire and a billion dollar company.
You can find nearly any service imaginable on the site, from psychic readings to coding help, but the highest paying jobs are resume writing, copywriting and copyediting, social media management, and website building.
How does Fiverr work for freelancers?
Fiverr is completely free to use for both freelancers and clients. Unlike many freelance platforms that require payment or an application form, you can start selling on the site as soon as you create your account.
To start selling your services, you will make gig postings. This is how clients will find your work and order from you. When creating your gig postings, you can include photos and videos of your work, timelines, dates, and other important details about the service you’ll be providing, such as your experience. Why should they hire you for their project?
Below is an example of a gig post from a top rated seller on Fiverr.
As you can see, they have included all important details as well as shown they have packages, which will include different levels of content depending on the price you pay.
Fiverr ranks all their sellers on a ranking system based on levels. All sellers start as New Sellers and can move up to Level 1, Level 2, and Top Rated Seller.
As you move up, you are more likely to attract the attention of clients who will be more inclined to purchase from more experienced, highly rated sellers. You also unlock key features such as being able to post more gigs.
In order to move up from New Seller to Level 1, you must
- Be an active seller for at least 60 days
- Complete at least 10 orders
- Earn $400 or more
- Maintain a 4.7-star rating over 60 days
- Deliver a 90% response rate score over 60 days
- Score a 90% order completion rate over 60 day
- Achieve a 90% on-time delivery score over 60 days
- Receive no warnings over 30 days
Read below to see how you can move to Level 2 and become a Top Rated Seller.
You can also track your ranking on your Seller Dashboard. This is also where you can see your analytics, communicate with your clients, and keep organized of your orders.
It’s important to note that regardless of your level, Fiverr takes a 20% cut from your final total. That means you come home with 80% of your total profits.
How does Fiverr work for clients?
You can easily switch between the same account as a freelancer and a client on Fiverr. Instead of making a job posting, you can scroll through the categories of services and look for a freelancer that is perfect for your project. You can also submit a request to Fiverr if you’re having trouble finding a freelancer, and they will match you with potential sellers.
When you’re ordering from a seller, remember to message the user first to go over any details and confirm your project before entering your payment information. A seller can deny your request at any time, but you should always check that the seller is up to the task.
You will be charged once you confirm the order, but the freelancer will not receive the funds until you are satisfied with the order. Oftentimes, sellers include the option to revise the final product if you are not satisfied.
Fiverr charges a 5.5%fee on all orders and an extra $2 fee for orders under $50.
We Work Remotely
What is We Work Remotely? (WWR)
We Work Remotely is the largest remote and freelance platform in the world. It is trusted by companies such as Google and Amazon. Unlike Fiverr, which focuses on short term projects, WWR helps freelancers and remote workers find more long term positions.
Founded in 2011, WWR has an average of 1000 job postings a month.
How does WWR work for employers?
Unlike Fiverr, which allows all users to post and sell on the site for free, WWR charges a price to post jobs. This is how they ensure they are posting the best jobs for freelancers and remote workers.
Prices are as follows –
To post one singular job on the site, you will pay a one time fee of $299. This could be a hefty price for some companies, but if you are needing to find that one freelancer, the price could be worth it.
WWR also offers packages if you have multiple jobs and projects to post.
Jobs are only listed for 30 days to make sure that all posts are active.
Compared to other job posting platforms such as LinkedIn or Indeed, WWR claims that they have twice as many candidates moving onto round 2 interviews.
They claim that 90% of all job postings are filled with employees from their platform, and that 80% of customers on the site are returning customers.
If you’re new to freelance and remote work, WWR even offers a guide to hiring remote workers and how it differs from having an in-house staff. Below are a few of the tips.
Unlike other freelance platforms, WWR works solely on posting your job and getting it out there to potential employees. You do not hire through the site, nor do you conduct payment or do business with the freelancer through the platform. That is entirely on your own accord, which means there are no extra fees for payment of your freelancer.
How does WWR work for employees?
You do not have to sign up for an account to use WWR as an employee. This is a unique feature to other platforms, though they do encourage you to create an account so that you can find jobs tailored towards your interests, it is not required.
This also means there are no fees or payment for employees, which is a great advantage as many freelance platforms often charge the freelancer.
All you have to do is look for jobs you’re interested in and apply. No contests, no bidding, and no annoying fee.
Below are some freelance positions currently listed on the site.
You can view the company profile, see how many others are applying, and when you click on Apply for position, you are led directly to the application.
Which freelance platform will you choose?
For short term projects, Fiverr may be your best bet. As a freelancer, WWR is definitely worth checking out as you can find some unique projects to work on. As a client, WWR is definitely for larger companies, rather than Fiverr which favors independent clients.
