YouTube Leads Streaming Surge, Hits Record 10% TV Share In July [REPORT]

Streaming services captured a record 41.4% of U.S. television viewing time in July.

According to audience measurement platform Nielsen’s latest The Gauge report, the streaming category hit a milestone, growing its share by 1.1 percentage points from June.

YouTube became the first streaming platform to exceed 10% of total TV usage, reaching 10.4% in July. This represents a 7% increase from the previous month, solidifying YouTube’s position as the most popular streaming service.

Paris Olympics Lit the Flame

Overall TV usage rose 2.3% in July compared to June and 3.5% year-over-year.

The increase is partially attributed to the start of the Summer Olympics in Paris, which began in the last week of July.

Broadcast viewing slightly increased to 20.3% of TV time, a 5% increase from July 2023.

The Olympics account for the top five broadcast telecasts in the July report, with the largest audience averaging 19 million viewers on NBC on July 28.

Peacock experiences the largest monthly usage increase among streaming platforms, up 33% in July.

This boost is driven by Olympics coverage and viewership of “Love Island USA.” Amazon Prime Video and The Roku Channel also see double-digit monthly increases, reaching 3.4% and 1.6% of TV viewing, respectively.

On the Cable Viewing End

Cable viewing remains steady compared to June but loses half a share point due to increased overall TV usage, ending the month with 26.7% of TV time.

Cable news viewing surged 23% from June and 52% year-over-year, driven by coverage of the Republican National Convention and an assassination attempt on former President Trump.

In streaming content, HBO’s “House of the Dragon” on Max leads with 4.7 billion viewing minutes in July. Disney+’s “Bluey” follows with 4.3 billion minutes, while Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” ranks third with 4.2 billion minutes.

The report also notes that each week in July ranks among the top four most-streamed weeks ever reported by Nielsen. Additionally, for the first time, ten streaming titles exceed 1 billion viewing minutes in a single week.
