Final 75,000 MetroCards To Feature NYC Social Media Stars Before System Goes Digital

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced its final commemorative MetroCard release, featuring prominent New York City social media content creators, as the transit system transitions to the OMNY contactless payment system.

The limited-edition series, launched in partnership with Instagram, showcases three versions highlighting content creators, including @SubwayTakes, @NewYorkNico, and @OverheardNewYork. Among the featured creators is David Roffe, who runs the @oldjewishmen social media account.

“People laugh at it, you giggle, you slide it, and you go on your way,” says Roffe, who, at 72 years old, has gained recognition for his comedy content and impromptu matchmaking attempts with subway riders.

The 75,000 cards are available at select MetroCard vending machines across 12 subway stations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Key distribution points include major transit hubs such as Grand Central-42 St, Atlantic Ave-Barclays Center, and 34 St-Penn Station.

This release marks the conclusion of the MTA’s custom MetroCard program, which has produced more than 400 limited editions since its inception in 1994. Previous editions have featured notable figures and brands, including The Notorious B.I.G., David Bowie, KISS, and Calvin Klein, who first advertised on the passes in 1998.

The MTA is moving toward fully implementing OMNY, its contactless fare payment system. The new system allows riders to pay using contactless credit or debit cards, smartphones, wearable devices, or OMNY cards.

Commuters are collecting these final commemorative versions, recognizing their significance as the last custom MetroCards in the system’s history. MTA states that the release celebrates New York City’s status as a global destination for art, music, and creativity while marking the end of an era in public transportation payment methods.
