Twitch Launches ‘Discovery Feed’ Just As Congress Threatens To Ban TikTok – Coincidence Or Strategic Move?

Amazon-owned live-streaming platform Twitch has introduced a new short-form video feature called “Discovery Feed,” Bloomberg reports. This comes just a week after U.S. lawmakers passed legislation that could lead to a nationwide ban on TikTok.

The timing raises questions about whether the launch is a strategic move to position Twitch as an alternative to TikTok.

According to Bloomberg, Discovery Feed allows viewers to scroll through clips extracted from these longer live-stream videos. The new feature appears as a tab in Twitch’s mobile app.

While Discovery Feed offers short videos akin to TikTok, there are key differences in how the content originates. On TikTok, creators directly upload and publish short videos, whereas Twitch viewers re-purpose segments from streamers’ live broadcasts without the creators uploading separately.

A Twitch spokesperson told Bloomberg that the Discovery Feed will be “personalized based on a viewer’s watch history and real-time interactions” and may include mature content adhering to the platform’s guidelines.

TikTok’s future remains uncertain as its parent company, ByteDance is being forced by Congress and the Biden administration to divest the popular app over national security concerns about potential Chinese government influence. TikTok boasts 170 million U.S. monthly users.

While streaming platforms like Twitch and TikTok have increasingly mirrored each other’s offerings in recent years, Bloomberg points to a key difference in their revenue-sharing models. Unlike TikTok, where creators can earn from advertising revenue, Twitch creators will not receive a cut of the revenue generated through Discovery Feed clips, potentially affecting the platform’s appeal to content creators.
