No Filters, No Facade: Becky Hulston’s Refreshing Take On Content Creation
Fashion influencer Becky Hulston, 27, from Birmingham, UK, stumbled into content creation through an unexpected detour: streaming video games on Twitch during the pandemic lockdowns.
As a rising social media star, she captivates audiences on Instagram and TikTok with her authentic approach and relatable content.
Hulston’s journey to success wasn’t straight. She grappled with mental health challenges and self-image issues, experimenting with different styles and personas before finding her true voice.
“I went through a harsh period with my mental health and anxiety,” Becky candidly shares. “I didn’t quite know who I was or what my purpose was in life.”
This personal struggle shaped her content philosophy, leading her to prioritize real connections.
Eventually, Becky found inspiration in other creators on social media, which prompted her shift towards beauty, fashion, and lifestyle content. This pivot has resulted in significant growth in her social media presence.
When describing her niche, Becky prioritizes authenticity above all else.
“If I had the choice, which is not a niche, but the word I would use is real,” she states. “I want people to feel like they’re friends with me, and I’m giving them genuine suggestions. I just want people to not think I’m unrealistic or fake.”
This commitment has opened doors to brand partnerships, including a recent collaboration with Pretty Little Thing that Becky describes as a “pinch me” moment.

Becky’s Creative Process
For Becky, the editing process is the most enjoyable part of content creation. She attributes this passion to her background in media and photography.
However, the influencer acknowledges the challenges of maintaining audience engagement.
“You have to make people want to know about you or want to see what you’re doing,” Becky explains. “Every single day, I’m trying to think of ideas. What shall I post? When shall I post? How many times shall I post a day?”
Therefore, Becky adopts a strategic approach to craft attention-grabbing videos that foster long-term engagement.
Her process involves analyzing successful content from other creators and identifying key elements that capture and retain viewer attention.
“I’ll write down what grabbed my attention and why I’ve watched that video for so long,” Becky says.
She stresses the importance of self-care in content creation, stating, “You also have to know when a good time is to rest because your health is more important.”
Speaking Directly to Viewers
Becky aims to stay informed about social media platform updates to keep her content relevant. “I always watch for any updates on social media,” she explains, “Instagram is a big one. So if there’s an update, I’ll look into what they’re updating and why.”
The creator also relies on TikTok to spot emerging trends. “TikTok is usually the first place where you are informed of anything,” she notes.
However, Becky stresses the importance of adapting trends to fit her style: “I’ve experimented with my style quite a lot, but I am in a place where I’m happy with what I’m doing.”
When it comes to brand collaborations, Becky prioritizes maintaining her personal identity.
“I’ll only really accept them if it’s something I would use or want to try,” she points out. “I don’t want to suggest something I would never use myself.”
Becky has also refined her approach to presenting sponsored content.
“I’ve only recently started to do it this way where I will look into the camera and speak about it,” she reveals. “When you’re talking to the camera and you make the viewers feel as though they’re conversing with you, I feel like that goes much better.”
Overcoming Insecurities
For Becky, a key lesson learned in her journey as a content creator is the importance of being oneself.
“The one big piece of advice I would give is just yourself,” she says while admitting to initially adopting a more stereotypical influencer persona but has shifted towards genuine self-expression.
“Now I’m edging towards just being myself. Sometimes I’ll do videos without filters or makeup,” Becky shares.
She also touches on insecurities about her Birmingham accent, realizing its value in connecting with her audience.
Becky believes her approach builds a loyal following.
“They don’t want to get to know a facade. They want to get to know you as a person,” she explains. “The minute you start being yourself and being true to yourself, it would open many doors.”
Looking to the future, Becky is excited about the relationships she’s building through her work.
“You meet people who you never would have probably spoken to before, and you make a relationship with brands, and I live for that,” she says enthusiastically.
Ultimately, Becky’s goal extends beyond personal success. “I just really want to inspire others as well,” she concludes.
