Instagram, Facebook Welcome Back Donald Trump: The Reason Behind Meta’s U-Turn

Meta has lifted restrictions on former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts ahead of the 2024 election. The company cites the need for equal standing between presidential nominees as the primary reason for this decision.

The announcement comes just before the Republican National Convention, where Trump is expected to secure the Republican nomination. Meta states it aims to ensure the American public can hear from both major party nominees on equal terms.

“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis,” Meta’s announcement reads.

Trump’s accounts were reinstated in early 2023 after a two-year ban following the January 6, 2021 events. At that time, Meta implemented additional safeguards to prevent potential violations.

The company now reports that these heightened penalties have not been necessary, as no violations have occurred since the accounts’ reinstatement. However, Meta maintains that any future violating content will result in removal and suspension ranging from one month to two years, depending on severity.

Following his suspensions from major platforms, including X, Trump launched his social media site, Truth Social, in 2022.
