Hasan Minhaj Makes Surprising Comeback: Why He’s Grilling Politicians On YouTube
Comedian and political commentator Hasan Minhaj is launching a new YouTube series, “Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know,” to interview politicians ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Minhaj has thus returned to political content creation following the cancellation of his Netflix show “Patriot Act” in 2020.
The series’ first episode features Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. Minhaj addresses pressing political issues such as the age of current President Joe Biden and concerns about democracy. The comedian describes Warren as an “intellectual athlete” and compares her anti-corporate stance to sports figures featured on popular social media accounts.
“Doesn’t Know” reunites Minhaj with key figures from his “Patriot Act” team, including co-creator Prashanth Venkataramanujam and an unnamed showrunner. This collaboration suggests a continuation of Minhaj’s previous political commentary style, albeit on a new platform.
Minhaj’s shift to YouTube follows a period of controversy, including allegations of a toxic work environment on “Patriot Act” and factual inaccuracies in his comedy specials that reportedly affected his potential return to “The Daily Show” as host.
His move to YouTube aligns with a growing trend of political content on the platform. Comedy Central’s recent uploads of Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” monologues have garnered over ten million views on some videos, indicating a strong audience appetite for political commentary.
