Instagram’s New Feature Lets You Go Live With Just Your Inner Circle

Instagram has introduced a new feature allowing users to live stream to a select audience, expanding its suite of privacy-focused tools. The Meta-owned social media platform now enables users to host Live broadcasts exclusively for their curated list of Close Friends, The Verge confirmed.

The global rollout of this update allows users to invite up to three additional accounts to join their live stream. This is a departure from the previous functionality, where Live broadcasts were visible to all followers on private accounts or anyone on public profiles, giving users more control over their content.

Instagram’s move aligns with its recent emphasis on more intimate modes of platform engagement. In November, the company introduced the option to make grid posts visible only to Close Friends. Earlier in May, a feature was added allowing users to mute interactions from all but their Close Friends list, potentially limiting harassment for content creators.

The new Live feature’s use cases, as suggested by Instagram, include sharing influencer-style content like haul or “get ready with me” videos without broader audience judgment or hosting study sessions with a small group of friends.
