Is Instagram’s New Meme Tool The Secret To Getting Users To Post More?
Instagram is exploring adding a new “Memes” option to its Reels editing tools, according to a screenshot posted by app researcher Radu Oncescu. The feature would enable users to overlay popular, animated meme elements onto their “Reels” clips.
According to Social Media Today, the meme option aims to provide access to a range of trending meme templates that users can add to their videos. However, Instagram would need to regularly update the library to keep the meme content relevant and engaging.
Instagram already added interactive “Stories Templates” in December to let users create “meme-able” Stories.
Social Media Today believes Instagram’s move aligns with its parent company, Meta’s broader push to drive more user-generated, participatory content. While Instagram usage continues rising, posting of original content declines, leaving fewer new videos to sustain engagement.
The participatory meme trend gained momentum on TikTok, which makes it easier for users to duet and add their own takes on viral trends through public posting options lacking on Instagram’s more enclosed friend networks.
