Meta Unveils ‘Edits’ Video Editing App As CapCut Exits U.S. Market

Meta has announced a new video editing app, “Edits,” aimed at filling the void left by ByteDance’s CapCut, which was recently removed from U.S. app stores amid a broader TikTok ban.

While TikTok returned after a brief ban, CapCut remains unavailable in the U.S. owing to the same law that required its parent company, ByteDance, to divest its operations in America or face a ban.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, shared that Edits will launch next month exclusively on Apple’s iOS platform, with an Android version to follow. Currently, Meta is collaborating with select content creators to gather feedback and fine-tune the app before its official release.

Key Features of Meta’s Edits App

Mosseri notes that Edits is designed with creators in mind, offering:

  • A dedicated inspiration tab to spark ideas.
  • Idea management tools for streamlined content planning.
  • An enhanced camera system for high-quality video creation.
  • Collaborative editing with the ability to share drafts.
  • Integrated performance analytics for videos published on Instagram.

According to Mosseri, Edits is “more for creators than casual video makers,” positioning it as a professional-grade tool.

Meta’s Responses to Market Movements

The timing of Meta’s announcement follows a pattern of strategic market responses from the company. In 2020, Meta launched Instagram Reels shortly after India banned TikTok. Similarly, the company introduced Threads in 2023 as an alternative to X.

Meta’s entry into the video editing space comes as existing players adjust their strategies. Andreessen Horowitz-backed video editing application Captions recently transitioned to a freemium business model, aiming to expand its user base in the wake of CapCut’s removal.

Edits is currently available for pre-order on the iOS App Store, though users cannot download it until the official launch next month. Mosseri emphasized that despite current market dynamics, Meta’s primary objective remains to provide optimal tools for creators.
