TikTok Skirts U.S. Restrictions, Allows Android Downloads via Package Kits

TikTok has introduced a new distribution method for U.S. Android users, enabling app downloads through package kits on its website as the platform navigates recent restrictions on its availability in traditional app stores, Reuters confirmed.

The move comes after both Apple and Google removed TikTok from their app stores following the implementation of a U.S. law on January 19. The legislation requires ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to either sell the platform or face a nationwide ban.

President Donald Trump, who took office after the law’s implementation, issued an executive order on January 20 extending the enforcement deadline by 75 days. Trump indicates he is in discussions with multiple potential buyers and expects to make a decision about TikTok’s future this month.

The platform, which serves approximately 170 million American users, maintains that U.S. officials have mischaracterized its relationship with China. TikTok states that its content recommendation engine and user data are stored in the United States on Oracle-operated cloud servers, with content moderation decisions affecting American users also made domestically.

In a separate development, Trump signed an executive order on February 3 directing the creation of a sovereign wealth fund within the next year, citing it as a potential vehicle for acquiring TikTok.

According to Reuters, U.S. officials express concerns about the potential misuse of Americans’ data under ByteDance’s ownership. Meanwhile, free speech advocates oppose the ban, which received broad congressional support and was signed into law by then-President Joe Biden.

“My expectation is that President Trump will push for measures mirroring the way China regulates foreign companies operating within its borders,” QYOU President Glenn Ginsburg recently told Net Influencer. “The U.S. could enforce partial American ownership of TikTok and implement safeguards to monitor and control its algorithm, particularly if concerns arise about undue influence on U.S. users.”
