Indie Artists Outshine Superstars On TikTok’s Global ‘Songs Of The Summer’ List

TikTok’s latest “Songs of the Summer” list features a mix of established stars and newcomers, with Chilean artists FloyyMenor and Cris MJ’s “Gata Only” claiming the top spot globally.

The reggaeton track has sparked over 15 million creations on TikTok, marking the first time a Chilean artist has entered the Billboard Hot Latin Songs since 1999.

In the United States, rapper Tommy Richman leads with “MILLION DOLLAR BABY (VHS).” After teasing snippets on TikTok, the song debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April.

R&B artist Tinashe secured the second position on the U.S. and global lists with “Nasty,” generating over 10 million video creations.

The list also features established names like Billie Eilish, whose track “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” ranks fourth globally, alongside rising stars such as 20-year-old rapper Lay Bankz at eighth place.

“Latin music is one of the most popular genres on TikTok, so it’s no surprise to see ‘Gata Only’ top our global list, alongside some other amazing emerging artists like Sevdaliza and Tommy Richman, as well as superstars such as Billie Eilish,” Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development, said in a blog post.

Richman attributes his song’s success to the platform. “It took on a life of its own that I could have never imagined,” he said in the statement.

Cross-Genre Impact

According to Obermann, the “Songs of the Summer” list reflects TikTok’s global reach, featuring tracks from various genres and regions.

“The Songs of the Summer list is proof that both new and emerging artists of every genre, from anywhere in the world, can connect with over a billion music fans TikTok every day, build their careers, and impact music culture,” Obermann added.

This year’s results continue a trend observed in previous years.

In 2023, Jain’s “Makeba” topped the U.S. list, while Mae Stephens, who transitioned from supermarket shifts to TikTok fame, led the global list with “If We Ever Broke Up.”

The platform’s influence extends beyond chart rankings, with artists like Sabrina Carpenter inspiring trends in which even Olympic athletes have participated.

GloRilla’s collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, “Wanna Be,” showcases how established TikTok stars can leverage the platform for success.
