Mobile Gaming Giant Voodoo Snaps Up Gen Z App BeReal For €500 Million

Voodooo, a mobile apps and games publisher with 7B+ worldwide downloads, announced it acquired BeReal, the social network dedicated to authenticity that has become popular with Gen Z users. The transaction values BeReal at €500 million.

Voodoo states this acquisition will accelerate its diversification into consumer apps beyond mobile games. The companies position the deal as highly complementary, with Voodoo intending to leverage its expertise in product strategy, growth, and infrastructure to unlock BeReal’s potential and drive further expansion.

“BeReal achieved incredible user loyalty and growth, showing a universal need to share real, unfiltered experiences with close friends,” Voodoo co-founder & CEO Alexandre Yazdi stated in the announcement.

Founded in 2019, BeReal has amassed over 40 million active users by establishing genuine social connections. The app prompts users once per day to capture and share whatever they are doing at that moment within a two-minute window. Photos disappear after 24 hours.

In 2022, BeReal became the #1 social networking app in Apple’s App Store and earned “App of the Year” honors. However, after initial explosive growth, BeReal’s expansion stabilized as it focused on building infrastructure.

Voodoo plans to help BeReal accelerate product development and paid user acquisition across markets. Aymeric Roffé, CEO of Voodoo’s Wizz social app, will take over as BeReal’s CEO to lead integration under founder Alexis Barreyat during a transition period.
